The Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) is comprised of initiatives focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energy, cleaner and more efficient use of fossil fuels, energy infrastructure, energy poverty, sustainable forests and land use, and climate change adaptation. The goal of ECPA is to foster partnerships across the Americas to achieve low carbon economic growth and development. ECPA is a flexible mechanism through which governments in the Western Hemisphere, on a voluntary basis, may lead multi-country or bilateral initiatives to promote clean energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. ECPA initiatives involve the private sector, civil society, academia, and international agencies and institutions.
Countries and organizations participating in ECPA include: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Commonwealth of Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guyana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Inter-American Development Bank, Jamaica, Latin American Energy Organization, Mexico, Nicaragua, Organization of American States, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, United States of America, and the World Bank.
ECPA Urban Planning Initiative
The Brazilian Government invites other countries to collaborate on sustainable urban development, including public transport, renewable energy, and sustainable housing, throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The Urban Planning Initiative will facilitate technical assistance, provide capacity-building for local public authorities, and promote public outreach for civil society to engage in energy efficiency within their communities. There will be a particular emphasis on urban development and planning in low-income areas of cities. Given the high rates of urbanization in the Western Hemisphere, support for this initiative offers the potential to spark a significant long-term reduction of the carbon footprint of cities. The U.S. Government is providing financial support for this initiative.
